Filmmaker Kiran Rao Diagnosed With Chikungunya; Undergoing Treatment at Home, Urges Fans to Stay Cautious

Renowned filmmaker Kiran Rao, best known for directing Laapataa Ladies and for being the former wife of Bollywood superstar Aamir Khan, has been diagnosed with Chikungunya. The director shared the health update through her Instagram story, informing fans that she is currently undergoing treatment at home.

Kiran Rao also appealed to the public to remain cautious, especially as mosquito-borne infections continue to rise in several parts of the country.

Shares Recovery Update on Social Media

On Tuesday, Kiran posted a picture of herself resting on a sofa, smiling at the camera. Her pet cat was also seen sitting near her feet, adding a warm and comforting touch to the post.

Sharing the update, she wrote,
“Alright guys, I have Chikungunya now — and yes, Miri is an excellent paramedic, keeping a timely watch on her mother’s fever.”

Mentions Severe Joint Pain, Requests People to Take Precautions

In another Instagram story, Kiran shared a glimpse of her recovery routine, showing greeting cards received from friends, along with a book and her AirPods.

She wrote that she is recovering slowly, supported by the love and care of her friends, but highlighted that the pain caused by the illness can be extremely difficult.

“Slowly… going through my friends’ cards and finishing my reading. I know you know this, but joint pain is intense. Everyone please take precautions,” she posted.

Had Appendix Surgery in December 2025

This health setback comes shortly after Kiran Rao underwent an appendix surgery in December 2025, following which she had shared photos from the hospital and expressed gratitude to doctors and fans for their support.

Chikungunya is a viral infection transmitted through mosquito bites, commonly causing high fever and severe joint pain. In many cases, joint pain may persist for several weeks, making recovery slow and physically exhausting.
