Exclusive: Nimrat Kaur on Women’s Safety and Her Journey in Acting

Actress Nimrat Kaur, currently earning praise for her negative role in The Family Man Season 3, recently shared her thoughts on women’s safety, acting choices, and her career journey in an exclusive conversation.

Nimrat, who has proven her versatility across films, theatre, advertisements, and OTT platforms, won hearts with The Lunchbox and appeared in movies like Airlift and Dasvi.

On Women’s Safety
“Feeling unsafe is a reality every girl experiences, far beyond offices or film sets,” Nimrat said. “Whether you are on the street or in public transport, there’s always an underlying awareness that you are not completely secure. Growing up in Delhi, I never really understood what it means to feel safe until I came to Mumbai. Safety is not a privilege or a facility—it is every girl’s fundamental, inalienable right.”

On Gender and Perception
Asked if she has ever felt inferior as a woman, Nimrat explained, “I am fortunate that I was raised in an environment where being a girl was never a limitation. No one ever told me I couldn’t do something because of my gender. Girls should not rely on their gender as a shortcut or excuse—they should focus on their work, not their label.”

First Big Poster Memory
When asked about her first career milestone, Nimrat recalled, “I vividly remember the first big poster of The Lunchbox at Juhu Circle in Mumbai. It was upside down, which left me unsure whether to laugh or cry. But later, appearing correctly in an advertisement poster gave me immense satisfaction, like a sweet response to that early mishap.”

On Long-Form vs Micro Drama
Nimrat reflected on content trends, “I’ve worked in ads for years, selling a product in 20–30 seconds. Whether it’s long-form shows or 2–3 minute vertical micro-dramas, engagement is what matters. It’s the performance and storytelling that count.”

Embracing Negative Roles
The actress noted her recent inclination toward grey and negative characters, “Often, the character chooses you rather than the other way around. I am grateful for opportunities in Dasvi, Kull, and now The Family Man Season 3. Negative or positive, a role is enjoyable when it challenges you and lets you immerse yourself completely. Working alongside Manoj Bajpayee in this series has been a remarkable learning experience, seeing his passion despite decades in the industry.”

Nimrat Kaur’s reflections underline her commitment to her craft and her advocacy for women’s safety, making her not just a talented actress, but a voice for change in society.
