Bollywood actress Selina Jetley has been fighting tirelessly for her brother, retired Major Vikrant Jetley, who has been in UAE custody since September 2024. On Tuesday, the Delhi High Court heard the matter and issued directions to the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) regarding his legal representation and welfare.
Vikrant Jetley, who has been living in Dubai since 2016, is reportedly detained in connection with a national security case. Selina has been unable to contact him for over 15 months, raising concerns about whether he is receiving adequate legal support and protection.
During the hearing, the court instructed the MEA to appoint Abu Dhabi-based law firm Khalid Almari & Co. to take responsibility for Vikrant Jetley’s case. The court further stated that if the ministry faces any difficulty in issuing orders or contacting the firm, it must inform the court through an affidavit. The MEA has been asked to take immediate steps to ensure effective legal representation and access for Vikrant, as well as to safeguard his well-being while in foreign custody.
The next hearing in this matter has been scheduled for 10 February 2026.
Selina Jetley’s Plea:
In her petition, Selina emphasized that the MEA has failed to assist her adequately. She requested the court to ensure that her brother receives effective legal aid, basic amenities, and communication access, enabling him to be aware of his rights and protection. Selina has consistently highlighted that Vikrant has been without proper legal or medical support since his detention in September 2024.
Family Perspectives:
Amid personal challenges in her married life, Selina has continued to fight the legal battle for her brother. She recently posted on social media, stating:
“I have been trying my best. I haven’t been able to speak to Vikrant for the past 15 months. My brother, Retired Major Vikrant Kumar Jetley, was taken into custody in the UAE on 6 September 2024. The Delhi High Court has heard my petition regarding his safety and access. The MEA has appointed a nodal officer to assist me in reaching him. Although I have not yet been able to speak to Vikrant, India’s Additional Solicitor General and Senior Counsel Chetan Sharma assured the court that they will make every effort to facilitate communication soon.”
On the other hand, Vikrant Jetley’s wife, Charul Jetley, through her lawyer Sudhanshu Pandey, told news agency ANI that Selina had initiated legal proceedings regarding consular access without informing or consulting the family, describing the move as “unfortunate and unnecessary.” Pandey added that Vikrant had retired early in 2016-17 for family reasons and settled in Dubai for private work. The detention reportedly involves matters related to national security and cybersecurity, which Charul was attempting to understand.
The lawyer also noted that Selina did not inform Charul about her plan to approach the Indian government through the court, which created confusion within the family.
The court has emphasized the importance of timely legal representation and consular access for Vikrant, ensuring his rights and safety are protected while the matter is resolved.
