Copyright Dispute Clouds Release of Kartik Aaryan–Ananya Panday Film

The upcoming romantic comedy “Tu Meri Main Tera, Main Tera Tu Meri”, starring Kartik Aaryan and Ananya Panday, has landed in legal trouble just days ahead of its scheduled Christmas release. A copyright infringement petition has been filed in the Bombay High Court by Trimurti Films, the original producers of the 1992 blockbuster Vishwatma.

The petition alleges that the film’s teaser unlawfully uses the signature beats and hook line of the iconic song “Saat Samundar Paar” without obtaining prior consent from the original rights holder. The respondents named in the case include Dharma Productions, Namah Pictures, music label Saregama, and rapper Badshah.

According to Trimurti Films, Saregama holds only limited distribution rights to the song under a 1990 agreement and does not possess the authority to grant synchronisation or remix licenses for use in a new film without the producer’s explicit approval. The petitioner claims that neither artistic nor financial consent was sought before incorporating the song into the teaser, amounting to a violation of copyright as well as moral rights.

The plea further accuses the filmmakers of misrepresentation, unfair trade practices, and passing off, asserting that the rights were knowingly misused. Trimurti Films has sought an immediate interim stay on the use of the disputed content and has demanded ₹10 crore in damages under licensing norms.

During the hearing before Justice Sharmila Deshmukh of the Bombay High Court, the respondents were granted time to file their replies. The matter is now scheduled for its next hearing on December 22, just three days before the film’s proposed release on December 25.

Senior Advocate Venkatesh Dhond, along with Advocate Hiren Kamod, appeared on behalf of Trimurti Films. The petition was filed through Advocates Rashmi Singh and Karan Khiyani.

With the release date fast approaching, the court’s decision could prove crucial for the fate of the film, making this legal battle one of the most closely watched entertainment disputes of the season.
