Celina Jaitly Appeals to PM Modi for Detained Brother in UAE: “I’m Just His Daughter, He Did the Work”

Bollywood actress Celina Jaitly has been vocally campaigning for her brother, retired Major Vikrant Jaitly, who has been held in detention in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) since 2024. Recently, she appealed to Prime Minister Narendra Modi to intervene and help secure her brother’s release, saying emotionally, “I’m just his daughter, he did the work, but it’s a matter of immense pride for me.”

Fighting for Justice in UAE

Celina’s fight gained a glimmer of hope when the court ordered India’s Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) to provide legal assistance and coordinate defense efforts for Vikrant in the UAE. She has consistently highlighted her family’s three-generation military legacy, emphasizing their service to the nation.

Speaking to Aaj Tak, she said, “For me, being a soldier… I’m just his daughter. He did the work, but it’s a matter of great pride.”

Emotional Appeal and Legal Support

In an interview with India Today, Celina spoke with a choked voice about the pain and struggle caused by her brother’s sudden disappearance and the prolonged legal battle. She revealed that the UAE-based law firm Khalid Almarri Partners & Advocates will represent Vikrant, including arranging meetings to ascertain the reasons for his detention.

Celina reflected on her family’s military heritage in a social media post, showing medals and sharing, “My father fought in the 1971 war, my grandfather in 1962. For me, being a soldier… I’m just his daughter, he did the work, and maybe it was written for me to fight this battle.”

Advocating for Her Brother’s Rights

Celina has been actively posting on social media, stating that her love for her brother has been the source of her determination. “My brother couldn’t speak for himself, and I knew staying silent would only increase his vulnerability,” she said.

She elaborated on their close bond: “After my three sons, Vikrant is my only close family. Even when answers weren’t forthcoming, I believed that standing firm was the only way to ensure accountability. As a sister, backing down was never an option. Protecting his rights and dignity, no matter how exhausting, was essential.”

Details on Vikrant Jaitly’s Detention

Vikrant, a retired Indian Army officer, had relocated to Dubai after retirement and, with his wife Charul Jaitly, set up a business there. Reports indicate he was arrested in connection with alleged espionage. According to PTI, he was employed at MATITI Group, a firm involved in trading, consultancy, and risk management services, and was accused of activities linked to UAE national security and cyber matters.

Celina noted that her brother has now received legal representation through her petition in the Delhi High Court, but his wife Charul is not formally part of the case. She expressed ongoing concern: “He was kidnapped and held without contact for eight months. I am waiting to hear his voice, to see him. I fear what might have been done to him.”

Raising Broader Security Concerns

Celina has also highlighted that her brother’s detention raises larger national security questions. “This is no longer just a personal matter. The abduction of our soldiers and veterans abroad—does this now threaten India’s national security? We must demand answers,” she said.

Personal Toll of the Detention

Celina described the emotional impact, saying, “During phone calls, words were few but the pain immense. My brother sacrificed his youth, his mind, and his life for India. He lived and bled for the tricolor.”
