‘Border 2’ to Bring Back Akshay Khanna, Suniel Shetty, and Sudesh Berry in Iconic Roles

The much-anticipated film ‘Border 2’, directed by Anurag Singh, is set to release on 23 January 2026, and fans have reason to rejoice as Akshay Khanna, Suniel Shetty, and Sudesh Berry are reprising their iconic roles from the 1997 blockbuster ‘Border’.

The original ‘Border’, directed by J.P. Dutta, was a historic hit, drawing 3.7 crore theatergoers. Starring Jackie Shroff, Suniel Shetty, Akshay Khanna, Puneet Issar, Sudesh Berry, and Kulbhushan Kharbanda, the movie was shot across Bikaner and Jodhpur on a ₹10 crore budget, and grossed ₹39.6 crore, setting box office records at the time.

Star-Studded Cast Returns

In ‘Border 2’, written by Nidhi Dutta, Sunny Deol, Diljit Dosanjh, Varun Dhawan, and Ahan Shetty play the lead roles, with the storyline again set against the backdrop of the 1971 India-Pakistan war. A source involved with the project told Mid-Day,
“Since Border 2 is also based on the 1971 India-Pakistan war, the characters from the original film will be seen in the sequel.”

Iconic Characters to Make Special Appearance

Akshay Khanna will reprise Second Lieutenant Dharamvir Singh Bhakri, Suniel Shetty as Assistant Commandant Bhairo Singh Rathore, and Sudesh Berry as Naib Subedar Mathura Das, all of whom had been martyred in the original film. The makers felt their return would have a strong emotional impact on the audience. Fans can also expect a special moment featuring Suniel Shetty and Ahan Shetty together.

Special Effects to Recreate Younger Looks

Shooting for these sequences was initially scheduled earlier this year but was delayed due to scheduling conflicts. The three actors filmed their respective scenes in Mumbai in November. The filmmakers will also use special effects to match their original looks and portray them as younger, staying true to the iconic appearances from the 1997 film.

‘Border 2’ is now ready for its 23 January 2026 theatrical release, promising a nostalgic yet thrilling cinematic experience.
