
Good news for Indian, Hindi, and Manipuri cinema! The Manipuri film ‘Boong’, produced by Bollywood actor-producer Farhan Akhtar and Ritesh Sidhwani, has received a BAFTA 2026 nomination in the ‘Children & Family Film’ category. The awards ceremony is scheduled for 22 February 2026.
Directed by Lakshmipriya Devi, ‘Boong’ is a Manipuri-language film that has been officially recognized by the British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) in London, where the nominations for the EE BAFTA Film Awards were announced.
Supported by Akhtar and Sidhwani, ‘Boong’ will compete with popular Disney films such as ‘Lilo & Stitch’, ‘Zootopia 2’, and the animated sci-fi fantasy ‘Arko’.
The Story of ‘Boong’
The film follows Boong (Gugun Kipgen), a young boy from the valleys of Manipur, who plans to surprise his mother with a special gift and also bring back his estranged father. The film beautifully explores whether Boong’s heartfelt intentions and plans succeed.
Film Festivals and Release
‘Boong’ had its world premiere at the 2024 Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF), marking a major milestone for Manipuri cinema. Later, on 19 September 2025, it was released in select Indian theaters, including PVR and INOX.
OTT Release
Currently, the film is not available on any streaming platform, including Netflix and Prime Video, and the makers have not announced any online release plans.
BAFTA Awards 2026
The BAFTA Awards 2026 will be held on 22 February at London’s Royal Festival Hall, hosted by Alan Cumming. The awards will honor films released in 2025.
