Veteran actor Arun Govil, famed for his portrayal of Lord Ram in Ramanand Sagar’s iconic TV series Ramayan, recently shared his thoughts on the upcoming film ‘Ramayanam’, starring Ranbir Kapoor as Lord Ram. Govil, who plays King Dasharath in the film, also addressed comparisons being made between Ramayanam and the 2022 movie Adipurush.
Govil Praises Ranbir Kapoor
Directed by Nitesh Tiwari, Ramayanam is one of the most anticipated films in the coming months. Arun Govil lauded the film and its lead actor, saying:
“Nitesh Tiwari, the cast, and the entire team have worked very hard. Ranbir Kapoor looks very good as Lord Ram. He is not only a talented actor but also a good human being.”
Govil emphasized the spiritual and moral qualities needed to portray a deity on screen:
“To play the role of a God, purity of soul and goodness of character are essential.”
On Physical Appearance and Comparisons
Govil stressed that visual presence is crucial for playing divine roles:
“When people watch you on screen, they should be able to see the deity in you. Appearance and aura are very important.”
While acknowledging that comparisons are natural, he firmly stated that Ramayanam should not be directly compared to Adipurush:
“There is a significant difference between the two films, and the narratives are essentially different. Comparing them doesn’t make sense.”
Star-Studded Cast of ‘Ramayanam’
- Ranbir Kapoor as Lord Ram
- Yash as Ravan
- Sai Pallavi as Sita
- Sunny Deol as Lord Hanuman
- Ravi Dubey as Lakshman
Govil noted that comparisons are also inevitable with Ramanand Sagar’s legendary 1987 TV series Ramayan:
“Since Sagar Ji’s Ramayan left a deep impression, some comparison is natural. But it should not be a source of negativity. Playing a God requires the right look and aura so that viewers can connect with the character.”
Conclusion
Arun Govil’s comments highlight the reverence required to portray divine characters and reinforce that Ramayanam, while inspired by the epic, is a unique cinematic endeavor distinct from previous adaptations like Adipurush.
