Ajit Pawar’s Cinematic Connection and Vision for Nashik Film City: ‘The Son of Baramati’ Leaves a Legacy

Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar, whose last rites were held in Baramati on 29 January 2026, had a deep and enduring connection with the world of cinema—one that remained even during his long political career. Born on 22 July 1959 in Deolali Pravara, Maharashtra, to Anantrao and Ashatai Pawar, Ajit lost his father at the age of 18. His father, Anantrao Pawar, elder brother of NCP leader Sharad Pawar, had been associated with the iconic filmmaker V. Shantaram at Rajkamal Studios in Mumbai.

V. Shantaram, a legendary figure in Indian cinema, had founded Rajkamal Studios in 1942, producing classics such as Jhanak Jhanak Payal Baje, Amar Bhoopali, Navrang, and Do Aankhen Barah Haath. Anantrao Pawar, with his expertise in cinematography and production, worked as an assistant cinematographer at the studio, gaining hands-on experience in camera work, shoot management, and the technical aspects of filmmaking. Later, he transitioned to work in agricultural cooperatives, but his cinematic influence clearly left an impression on his son.

Ajit Pawar, while primarily a political leader, maintained his connection with films. In his lifetime, he approved the development of a new film city in Igatpuri, Nashik district, providing government land and guidance for the project. The initiative aims to reduce the pressure on Mumbai’s Goregaon Film City and boost local employment, tourism, and related businesses, leveraging Igatpuri’s scenic landscapes just two hours from Mumbai.

Ajit Pawar’s funeral saw a massive outpouring of grief. Bollywood actor Riteish Deshmukh was visibly emotional, and Andhra Pradesh Minister Nara Lokesh also paid his respects. Ajit Pawar’s sons, Jay and Parth Pawar, performed the cremation rites. Known for his integrity and dedication, Ajit Pawar leaves behind a legacy not only in politics but also in his vision for regional development and cinema.
