Bollywood director Aditya Dhar has carved a niche for himself by creating blockbuster films that shake up the industry, even with a limited number of projects. Married to actress Yami Gautam, Dhar’s journey is a testament to talent, dedication, and vision.
Career Highlights
Aditya Dhar, born 12 March 1983 in a Kashmiri Pandit family in New Delhi, graduated from Delhi University and spent over two decades in music theatre before venturing into screenwriting and filmmaking. In 2021, he co-founded the production company B62 with his brother Lokesh Dhar and directed “Dhurandhar”, which grossed an impressive ₹555 crore in just 17 days.
Writing and Direction
Dhar started his Mumbai career in 2006 as an assistant director. He contributed as a lyricist and dialogue writer for several films, including:
- Kabul Express (songs)
- Hal-e-Dil and Daddy Cool (lyrics)
- Akrosh and Tez (dialogues)
He then made his directorial debut with the 2019 blockbuster “Uri: The Surgical Strike”, starring Vicky Kaushal and Yami Gautam. The film, shot in Serbia, collected ₹244 crore in India and ₹340 crore worldwide, becoming the fourth highest-grossing film of the year. Dhar received the National Award for Best Director for this cinematic feat.
Shelved Projects
Despite his success, Dhar faced setbacks with two high-profile projects:
- “The Immortal Ashwatthama” with Vicky Kaushal – planned as a trilogy in 2021, shelved due to COVID-19 and budget constraints.
- “Raat Baaki” with Katrina Kaif and Fawad Khan – a romantic drama that could not proceed due to political issues following the Uri attack.
Personal Life and Net Worth
Aditya Dhar married Yami Gautam on 4 June 2021, and the couple welcomed their son Vedavid on 10 May 2024. Reports estimate his net worth at ₹100 crore, including luxury cars and a lavish Mumbai residence.
With only two films in six years, Aditya Dhar has firmly established himself as one of Bollywood’s most influential directors, combining commercial success with critical acclaim, proving that true talent needs no volume to make a mark.
