Popular Bhojpuri actress Sambhavna Seth, known for her hit songs and strong screen presence, recently opened up about the dark side of the film industry. Speaking in an exclusive interview on Nayandeep Rakshit’s podcast alongside Avinash Dwivedi, she revealed how some big stars tried to exploit newcomers through the notorious casting couch.
Sambhavna, who is currently focusing on YouTube vlogging and connecting with fans, said, “I used to get extremely nervous, worried that someone might take advantage of me. People are often waiting to exploit others, especially in the film industry. Things have improved now, but back then, this was very common. My first song was already a big hit, so it made things slightly easier for me.”
The actress described the predators she encountered: “At that time, the people in positions of power acted like stars but were actually predators. They couldn’t directly force anything, but it was clear they wanted favors. They would hint at making me a heroine, saying, ‘Why are you doing only item songs? You should be the main lead.’ They tried to lure me, but I refused. I told them, ‘Let me finish this song and move ahead. I am happy with my work and my earnings. I won’t compromise to become a lead with someone I cannot work with.’”
Sambhavna further explained how these favors were demanded: “They would promise one film if I agreed to another. It was a trap. I knew their ways and stood my ground. Even today, some of these tactics exist, though more indirectly because of cameras and scrutiny. Refuse them, and they could easily block your career.”
Addressing the broader issue in Bhojpuri cinema, she added, “Many young actresses today are still forced into this quagmire. They feel they have no choice. If they refuse, work doesn’t come. The current stars in the industry, who call me ‘didi’ and are my friends, would never behave like that. If they offer work, I respect them completely.”
Sambhavna Seth’s candid revelations shine a light on the persistent challenges women face in regional cinema, while also highlighting her courage in standing up against exploitation.
