Chennai: Tamil film actress Gauri Kishan recently faced an inappropriate question about her weight during a press event for her film ‘Others’, sparking outrage and support from the South Indian film fraternity. The incident unfolded when a YouTuber asked her co-star Aditya Madhavan if Gauri’s weight made it difficult to perform certain scenes. The question, widely seen as body-shaming, prompted a firm response from the actress.
Gauri Responds Strongly
Gauri did not hold back. Interrupting the YouTuber mid-question, she said in Tamil, “What does my weight have to do with you? What does it have to do with the film? My weight is my choice. It does not define my talent.” She later spoke to NDTV, expressing disappointment that no one initially supported her during the uncomfortable exchange.
A Message Against Body-Shaming
Reflecting on the incident, Gauri added, “Last week, when it first happened, I froze. I regret not speaking up then, not for myself, but so that no other actress has to face this. This industry is not easy.” She also clarified that she was fluent in Tamil, dismissing the YouTuber’s claim that she misunderstood his question. “This was not a joke, it was not funny,” she said.
Industry Support
The South Indian film industry quickly rallied behind Gauri. Director Pa. Ranjith, actors Kevin and Khushbu Sundar, as well as her co-star Aditya Madhavan, condemned the YouTuber’s behavior. Aditya also apologized for not speaking up in her defense during the event. The South Indian Artists Association (Nadigar Sangam) released a statement expressing solidarity, saying, “We strongly condemn the incident involving our sister Gauri Kishan and will take necessary steps to ensure such events do not happen in the future.”
Gauri’s Stand for All Women
Gauri Kishan also delivered a clear message: “Every woman’s body is different. Stop body-shaming. I’ve worked hard for my roles and my craft. I don’t need anyone’s validation, and I will speak up when something is wrong.” Her courage in addressing the issue has sparked conversations about body-shaming and sexism in the film industry, highlighting the importance of respect for performers both on and off the set.
