Work Culture in Japan: What Indian Professionals Should Know Before Taking a Job

Tokyo/New Delhi: Japan, renowned for its advanced technology, natural beauty, and cleanliness, has opened its doors to foreign workers in recent years. While the country offers ample job opportunities, understanding its work culture is crucial for those planning to move.

A video shared on the Instagram page ‘Tech Minds Japan’ features an Indian woman working as a project manager at Rakuten, a Tokyo-based company. She shared her experiences of moving from India to Japan and adapting to the local professional environment.

How She Got the Job:
The Indian professional, a graduate of IIT Hyderabad, explained that she secured her job through a campus placement program at her college. This opportunity led to her current role in Tokyo, highlighting how Japanese companies actively recruit international talent.

Work Culture in Japan vs. India:
Asked about differences in work culture, she said that unlike India—where colleagues may call or message late at night regarding work—in Japan, employees are not expected to respond after office hours. “I can switch off my laptop and don’t need to check emails or answer calls after work,” she said. She praised the clear separation between work and personal life, noting it as a major advantage of working in Japan.

Cost of Living in Tokyo:
Regarding expenses, she noted that a single person sharing an apartment with friends could manage on approximately ¥150,000 (around ₹85,000) per month for living and food. She advised prospective professionals not to arrive with overly high expectations but to focus on enjoying the experience and gradually adapting to life in Japan.

Conclusion:
For Indians considering jobs in Japan, understanding the local work culture and realistic cost of living is key to a smooth transition. Japanese work environments value productivity during office hours and respect personal time, offering a balanced professional lifestyle compared to many other countries.
