Why Indian Youth Are Learning Japanese: Over 400 Candidates Trained, NSDC Program Opens Opportunities Abroad

New Delhi: Under the initiative of the Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship, young Indians from states ranging from Manipur to Uttar Pradesh are learning Japanese language to tap into job opportunities in Japan. The training covers not only the language but also cultural orientation, enabling candidates to work effectively in Japanese industries.

The program, implemented by the National Skill Development Corporation (NSDC), has so far trained over 400 candidates, with 185 already employed in Japan. Recently, a new batch of 40 candidates completed training and will join sectors such as hospitality, agriculture, and manufacturing in cities including Tokyo, Ibaraki, and Hokkaido. Currently, another 100 candidates are undergoing training at the NSDC International Centre in Noida.

Why Japanese?

According to NSDC, training is conducted under close supervision, with trainers visiting from Japan to guide candidates. The need for skilled workforce in Japan is growing, especially given its aging population and labor shortages. This opens significant opportunities for Indian youth in healthcare, manufacturing, agriculture, construction, and the service sector.

India-Japan Workforce Partnership

Economic Advisor to the Ministry, Archana Mayaram, highlighted that in August last year, leaders of India and Japan developed a joint vision and global partnership strategy. Over the next five years, the plan aims for a human resource exchange of 500,000 people, with 50,000 skilled professionals from India expected to work in Japan. Indian professionals entering the Japanese workforce are thus contributing to India’s growing presence in the global economy.

Expanding to Other Languages

NSDC CEO Arun Kumar Pillai noted that the organization is helping young Indians build international careers. The NSDC International Language Training Capacity is being expanded, and through the Skill India Digital Hub, candidates can access all details from application to training. Partnerships with other countries are also underway, enabling training in additional foreign languages based on global demand.

This initiative reflects a growing trend where language skills combined with vocational training are enabling Indian youth to explore overseas employment and strengthen India’s role in the international labor market.
