Every year, millions of students across the world leave their home countries in pursuit of higher education abroad. India is no exception. Countries such as the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and Germany have become top destinations for Indian students. According to government data, over 1.8 million Indian students are currently studying overseas, a number larger than the population of several small nations.
Most Indian students opt for master’s degrees, particularly in Computer Science, Engineering, Management, and Medicine. A recent report by Leap Scholar, based on interactions with nearly 30 lakh students, sheds light on the real reasons driving this massive outbound education trend.
Two Key Reasons Behind the Study-Abroad Rush
The report identifies two primary attractions that motivate students to leave their families and homeland:
- Affordable Education
Contrary to popular belief, many international destinations offer lower or more cost-effective education compared to private institutions in India, especially in Europe and emerging study hubs. - Post-Study Work Visa Opportunities
The chance to work after completing a degree plays a decisive role. Students see overseas education as a pathway to global employment, international exposure, and long-term career stability.
In addition, the growing influence of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in education and employment has further encouraged students to seek advanced and future-ready education abroad.
Which Countries Are Attracting Indian Students the Most?
The report highlights a dramatic surge in interest for several countries:
- Germany witnessed a 377% year-on-year rise in interest for 2024–25, up from 219% the previous year.
- New Zealand recorded an astonishing 2,900% increase in student interest.
- United Arab Emirates (UAE) saw the highest jump, with interest rising by 5,400%.
Why These Countries Stand Out
- Germany offers an 18-month post-study work visa, making it highly attractive for long-term career planning.
- UAE provides lower education costs, geographical proximity to India, and expanding global job opportunities.
- New Zealand’s flexible immigration policies allow students to stay and work for up to three years after completing their studies.
A Growing Global Trend
Affordable education, strong post-study employment options, and favorable immigration policies have emerged as the strongest pull factors. Together, they explain why Indian students are increasingly willing to leave their homes, families, and comfort zones in search of global academic and professional opportunities.
