When Gen Z Should and Shouldn’t Switch Jobs: Anupam Mittal Explains the Right Timing

Anupam Mittal, founder of People Group and Shaadi.com and judge on Shark Tank India, has come out in defense of Gen Z professionals amid growing criticism of their job-hopping tendencies. Born between 1997 and 2012, Gen Z employees are often perceived as unwilling to stay with a company for long, with reports indicating that nearly 58% of them prefer to switch jobs within a year.

Mittal criticized “career gurus” who shame young professionals for exploring opportunities. In a LinkedIn post, he explained that switching jobs early in a career is not disloyalty but rather self-awareness. “At the start of your career, you are essentially ‘dating’ industries—learning what roles and cultures suit you. If you don’t feel comfortable, it’s okay to move on,” he wrote.

The Right Age to Explore

According to Mittal, ages 21 to 24 are ideal for exploring, learning new skills, and discovering your professional preferences. “In the first year, you learn; in the second, you apply; in the third, you refine your mistakes and succeed,” he noted.

When Job-Hopping Should Stop

Mittal advises that after 25, professionals should focus on committing to a company and fully investing in their work. “Post-25, dedicate yourself completely! Find the right company and commit for at least four years. If you aspire to become a founder or CEO, you need to prove you can withstand challenges. It takes one year to understand a job, but 3–5 years to truly understand an industry,” he explained.

Impact on Career Growth

Drawing on his recruitment experience, Mittal emphasized that candidates lacking 4–5 years of consistent experience are rarely considered for senior roles. True expertise comes not from switching jobs frequently but from seeing the results of your decisions over time.
