UP Police Exam 2026: No More Negative Marking for Constable and Jail Warder Recruitment

Good news for candidates preparing for the Uttar Pradesh Police Constable and Jail Warder recruitment exams 2026. The state government has decided to abolish negative marking in these exams, a move approved by the Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath-led Cabinet.

What This Means for Candidates

Previously, candidates faced deductions for incorrect answers—each correct answer in the Constable exam was awarded 2 marks, while half of the marks earned from correct answers were deducted for wrong responses. With the new decision, wrong answers will no longer reduce marks, allowing candidates to attempt all questions without fear.

Benefits of Removing Negative Marking

  • Attempt Questions Fearlessly: Candidates can now answer all questions confidently without worrying about losing marks.
  • Take Calculated Risks in General Knowledge & Current Affairs: Previously, risky guesses could reduce scores. Now, candidates can attempt uncertain questions freely.
  • Higher Scores: Even if some answers are wrong, the total score will not decrease, making it easier for candidates to reach the cutoff.
  • Better Time Management: Candidates will no longer waste time overthinking difficult questions, as there is no penalty for wrong attempts.

Implementation

To implement this change, the UP Cabinet has approved amendments to the UP Police Subordinate and Head Constable Service (Fourth Amendment) Rules 2025 and the UP Jail Administration & Reform Department Jail Warder Service (Second Amendment) Rules 2025. The Uttar Pradesh Police Recruitment and Promotion Board (UPPRPB) will issue an official notice soon, confirming that the new recruitment exams for Constables and Jail Warders will follow this updated system.

This decision is expected to reduce exam stress and encourage candidates to maximize their performance, while also increasing competition among aspirants.
