University of Mumbai to Scrap 304 Old Examinations; 125 Exams Have No Registrations in Three Years

In a significant move to streamline its academic framework, University of Mumbai (MU) has decided to discontinue 304 outdated examinations. Among these, 125 exams have not seen a single registration in the past three years, highlighting their obsolescence and lack of student interest.

Breakdown of Affected Exams

The 125 exams with zero registrations span multiple streams:

  • Commerce & Management: 23 exams
  • Humanities: 15 exams
  • Interdisciplinary Studies: 42 exams
  • Science & Technology: 45 exams

Additionally, 179 exams pertain to courses that have been officially closed for over a decade. According to the Examination and Evaluation Board, these exams have been declared inactive and will no longer be conducted regularly.

Registrations Could Revive Exams

The university clarified that if any affiliated college or institution submits a proposal for student registrations in these courses, exams could still be conducted. In such cases, processes like exam scheduling, question paper preparation, and appointment of evaluators would follow standard university guidelines.

A Step Toward Curriculum Reform

This decision is not merely administrative but also signals MU’s efforts to modernize higher education. Maintaining courses and exams without student participation was an unnecessary drain on resources.

With the National Education Policy (NEP) and evolving industry needs, universities are under pressure to update curricula and eliminate outdated programs. By discontinuing these 304 inactive exams, MU aims to focus on relevant and in-demand courses, ensuring optimal use of resources and better alignment with contemporary educational standards.
