Most UPSC toppers with high ranks aim for the IAS, but some take a different path. Siddharth Babu, an Indian Foreign Service (IFS) officer, is one such example. Despite securing All India Rank 15 in the 2016 UPSC Civil Services Exam, he chose IFS over IAS. His story has garnered attention after he was seen alongside Prime Minister Narendra Modi during the 77th Republic Day celebrations in 2026.
From Kerala to Civil Services
Siddharth hails from Kerala. After completing his 12th grade, he earned an engineering degree. Driven by a desire to join the civil services, he began preparing for the UPSC exam, focusing on his long-term goal of serving the nation.
Overcoming Initial Setbacks
Siddharth did not succeed in his first attempt at UPSC. Undeterred, he persisted, and in his second attempt (UPSC 2016), he secured All India Rank 15, with International Relations as his optional subject.
Passion for International Relations
While most toppers would naturally opt for the IAS, Siddharth’s deep interest in international relations led him to choose the Indian Foreign Service (IFS). He is part of the 2017 IFS batch and has steadily built his career in diplomacy.
Strategy and Preparation
Siddharth’s preparation strategy was rooted in consistency and interest-based learning. He focused on subjects he was passionate about, designed a disciplined time-table, and followed it diligently over a long period. He emphasizes that success in UPSC is not about excessive study but about smart, focused preparation.
Current Role and Recognition
Currently posted as EA (Executive Assistant) in the Ministry of External Affairs, Siddharth is known for his multilingual skills and often works as a translator between PM Modi and foreign leaders. His visibility alongside the Prime Minister during the 2026 Republic Day celebrations has brought him widespread recognition and appreciation for his contributions and achievements.
Siddharth Babu’s journey serves as an inspiring example for aspirants who wish to pursue their passion over conventional choices, showing that dedication, strategic preparation, and following one’s interests can lead to success and recognition.
