New Delhi / February 12, 2026: Every year, thousands of Indian students travel to the United States to pursue higher education. For first-time arrivals, navigating the airport and immigration process can be daunting. Knowing what documents to carry and what steps to follow can make the experience smooth and stress-free.
1. Disembark and Reach the Port of Entry
Upon landing, passengers are directed to the Port of Entry, where they officially enter the United States. Immediately after exiting the plane, students must go through U.S. Immigration Checkpoints. All relevant documents should be carried in hand luggage, and originals are strongly recommended.
2. Complete the Immigration Checkpoint Procedure
According to the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, international students must have the following documents ready:
- Passport with a valid visa
- Form I-20 (Certificate of Eligibility for Non-Immigrant Student Status)
- University Letter of Acceptance
- Proof of tuition fee payment
- SEVIS I-901 fee receipt
- Academic transcripts and certificates
- Standardized test scores (e.g., IELTS, TOEFL)
- Bank statements showing sufficient funds to cover living expenses
Immigration and customs clearance is a two-step process. First, at the immigration checkpoint, students present their passport, visa, and I-20. After collecting checked baggage from the carousel, they proceed to customs for additional verification.
3. Collect Your Baggage
Follow airport signage or ask airport staff for directions to the baggage claim area. Many travelers use strategies like attaching distinctive stickers to their luggage to make identification easier.
4. Clear Customs
The customs process can take longer than immigration. CBP officers may ask questions about the purpose of your stay, university enrollment, and how your expenses will be covered. There is no need to worry—answer honestly, keep your documents handy, and stay calm.
5. Proceed to Campus
Once customs clearance is complete, students can exit the airport. Options include buses, taxis, or ride-sharing services. Before booking a cab, check if your university offers shuttle services for students—this is often the easiest and most economical way to reach campus.
Upon arrival, you will be guided to your dormitory or assigned accommodation, greeted by senior students, and attend orientation sessions to familiarize yourself with campus rules, facilities, and academic expectations.
Key Tip: Being prepared with all necessary documents and understanding the steps from landing to reaching campus can make your U.S. arrival smooth and stress-free.
