
Several states in India have announced school closures this December due to adverse weather conditions, local festivals, and administrative reasons. Jammu & Kashmir has declared a three-month long break, while Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh will see schools closed for 10–12 days. Meanwhile, schools and colleges in the southeastern region of India remain shut due to Cyclone Ditwah.
Cyclone Ditwah Hits Tamil Nadu:
The cyclone made landfall along the Tamil Nadu coast on 1 December, bringing heavy rains and strong winds. As a precaution, authorities have ordered the closure of schools, colleges, Anganwadi centers, and other educational institutions in the affected areas. People from coastal regions of Chennai, Puducherry, and southern Andhra Pradesh have been advised to move to safer locations.
Kanyakumari Festival Holidays:
Schools and colleges in Kanyakumari remain closed due to the Kottar Peralaya Festival, which attracts devotees from Tamil Nadu, Kerala, and other southern states. Institutions are scheduled to reopen on Saturday, 6 December 2025, to make up for the holiday.
Kerala School Holidays:
The Kerala government has declared 9 and 11 December 2025 as public holidays in line with the local body elections. Schools, government offices, and public institutions in specific districts will remain closed, with private companies required to grant paid leave.
- 9 December Holidays: Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Kottayam, Idukki, Ernakulam
- 11 December Holidays: Thrissur, Palakkad, Malappuram, Kozhikode, Wayanad, Kannur, Kasaragod
Uttar Pradesh Winter Break:
All schools in UP will observe winter holidays from 20 December to 31 December 2025, closing for the final 10–12 days of the year and reopening in the new year.
Madhya Pradesh School Schedule:
In MP, winter break is expected to start from 23 December 2025. Schools under the PM Shri initiative will remain closed until 1 January 2026, totaling 10 consecutive days.
Jammu & Kashmir Extended Break:
The state has announced a three-month closure due to record-breaking cold temperatures. Schools for pre-primary to 8th grade will remain shut from 1 December 2025 to 28 February 2026, while classes 9–12 will be closed from 11 December 2025 to 28 February 2026.
These measures ensure the safety of students and staff during extreme weather events and local celebrations, while aligning with administrative and electoral requirements.
