South Asian University (SAU) Expands Graduation Programs
South Asian University (SAU) in Delhi has witnessed rapid growth since its graduation programs were launched. Within two years, student enrollment has tripled. From 2026, the university plans to introduce new courses, campus placements, and will continue to receive financial contributions from member SAARC countries.
SAU, established in 2010 with the approval of SAARC parliaments, has expanded admissions significantly in the last two years, largely due to the introduction of market-relevant programs such as B.Tech, Integrated BBA-MBA, and BS-MS courses. In 2025, countries like Maldives and Bangladesh also released their long-pending grants, supporting the university’s growth. Currently, 90% of the students are from India, with 95% of new admissions for the current session being Indian students.
New Courses for 2026-27
SAU President, Prof. K.K. Aggarwal, shared with NBT that in addition to the existing Master of Laws (LLM) program, a new LLB program will begin in 2026-27 with two sections of 60 seats each.
Other additions include undergraduate and postgraduate journalism programs, with two international-standard studios being set up for practical training. The university will also increase seats for BBA and MBA programs. A Master of Data Science course, combining management and computer science, is also being launched.
Why LLB Was Delayed Earlier
The LLB program was previously on hold due to variations in bar council regulations across SAARC countries. After detailed study, it was found that 90% of the syllabus is common across countries. The remaining 10% will be taught online by experts from the respective countries, ensuring international students can meet local bar council requirements.
Campus Placements Coming Soon
With graduation programs growing, SAU will also establish a campus placement cell. Earlier, most postgraduate students proceeded to PhD programs. Now, undergraduates will have direct access to career opportunities.
Enrollment Growth and Capacity
Prof. Aggarwal noted that admissions have grown from 400 new students in a year (2023-24) to 1104 in 2025. The university currently has a capacity of about 4,000 students. For 2026, the focus will remain on new courses, including management programs, rather than increasing numbers drastically.
International Student Participation
SAU welcomes students from Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Maldives, Nepal, Sri Lanka, and Pakistan. While no Pakistani students enrolled this year, 20 students from Bangladesh joined. Visa approvals, governed by the Indian government, influence international admissions.
With these initiatives, SAU aims to strengthen its position as a regional hub for higher education, offering modern programs aligned with market demands and global standards.
