Every year on January 23, India observes Parakram Diwas to honor the indomitable courage and selfless service of Subhash Chandra Bose, popularly known as Netaji. This day also marks his birth anniversary.A Revolutionary Leader for India’s Freedom
Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose was a distinguished Indian nationalist leader who played a pivotal role in India’s struggle for independence. His commitment to the nation was evident when he refused a prestigious job under British rule to dedicate his life to India’s freedom. Bose demonstrated his courage, discipline, and leadership through the Azad Hind Fauj (Indian National Army), inspiring generations to fight for the nation’s sovereignty.
Early Life and Education
Bose was born on January 23, 1897, in Cuttack, Odisha. He completed his early education locally and earned a degree from Calcutta University. Determined to serve, he traveled to England to prepare for the Indian Civil Services (ICS) examination.
Excellence in ICS Exam
In 1919-20, Bose successfully cleared the ICS examination, securing fourth rank. Though he became eligible for the prestigious ICS officer role (now IAS), his deep commitment to India’s independence led him to reject the British government service.
Joining the Freedom Struggle
Bose’s patriotic zeal drew him to the Indian National Congress (INC), where he rose rapidly due to his revolutionary ideas and advocacy for complete independence from British rule. He was elected INC President in 1938 and 1939, though he later resigned to pursue more direct action against colonial rule.
The Azad Hind Fauj and Global Efforts
To liberate India from British rule, Bose established the Azad Hind Fauj (Indian National Army). He also set up the Free India Centre in Berlin and launched Azad Hind Radio to spread the message of freedom globally. Through these efforts, he inspired Indians both at home and abroad to join the struggle for independence.
Why Parakram Diwas is Celebrated
Netaji’s famous slogan, “Give me blood, and I will give you freedom”, continues to resonate across generations. To honor his bravery and determination, the Government of India declared January 23 as Parakram Diwas in 2021. The day celebrates his enduring legacy of courage, patriotism, and unwavering resolve in India’s fight for independence.
