Planning to Study in New Zealand? Here’s Who Can Apply for a Student Visa and How Much It Costs

Interest among Indian students in studying in New Zealand has been steadily increasing over the past few years. Gradually, more and more students are choosing the country for higher education.

If you are planning to study in New Zealand this year, it is important to understand the student visa requirements. To apply for a student visa, the first step is to secure admission in a recognized New Zealand university or college. The visa is granted to students who can fund their studies independently or through scholarships or education loans.

What Does the Student Visa Allow?
A New Zealand student visa permits students to pursue full-time courses at universities or colleges. It also allows part-time work during the academic term and full-time work during holidays. The visa is typically issued for the duration of the course, up to a maximum of four years.

Who Can Apply?
To be eligible for a student visa:

  • The applicant must have an admission offer from a New Zealand university or college.
  • Sufficient funds must be available to cover tuition fees and living expenses.
  • Students under 10 years of age are eligible but must live with their parents rather than in hostels.
  • Applicants must be in good health and demonstrate a genuine intention to study in New Zealand.

How Much Money Is Required?
Applicants must prove they can cover tuition fees as well as living expenses. The estimated living cost is NZD 10,000 per year (approximately ₹10.36 lakh). Proof of funds can be shown via bank statements, education loan certificates, or a guarantor.

Depending on age and nationality, applicants may also need a chest X-ray or medical examination. Those aged 17 or older will require a police certificate if they intend to stay in New Zealand for 24 months or more.

Work Rules for Students
Student visa holders are allowed to work up to 25 hours per week during the academic term and full-time during vacations. The visa also allows multiple entries and exits from the country. Applications must be submitted online, and the government recommends applying at least three months in advance to ensure timely approval.

With careful planning and proper documentation, Indian students can take full advantage of New Zealand’s high-quality education system while gaining work experience during their studies.
