“Pakistan Insulted Me and Didn’t Pay, Yet I’m Back”: Jason Gillespie Returns as Coach

Former Australian fast bowler Jason Gillespie, who resigned as Pakistan’s head coach amid allegations of mistreatment and unpaid dues, has shocked everyone by returning to the country. Gillespie has now been appointed head coach of the newly-formed Hyderabad franchise in the Pakistan Super League (PSL).

A Short and Controversial Tenure
Gillespie’s previous stint as Pakistan’s head coach lasted only nine months. He resigned abruptly in December 2024, just before the Test series against South Africa, citing disrespectful treatment and claiming that the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) had not paid him his dues. Despite his strong accusations, the PCB had dismissed all claims, stating that Gillespie resigned without serving his full notice period.

Gillespie Confirms PSL Comeback
The 50-year-old former cricketer shared the news of his return on social media, expressing excitement about joining the Hyderabad franchise. On his former Twitter handle, Gillespie wrote, “Thrilled to be part of the Kingsmen cricket family. Excited to join the Hyderabad team and looking forward to the journey ahead.” He is expected to be actively involved in the PSL 2026 player auction on 11 February. This edition of the league will feature two new teams, with Hyderabad and Sialkot as their respective bases, and matches set to begin on 26 March.

Reasons Behind His Previous Resignation
In an earlier interview with ABC Sport, Gillespie had revealed that a key reason for his resignation was the removal of Tim Nielsen, the team’s high-performance coach. He said, “I was completely surprised by the decision not to retain a high-performance coach. Poor communication made it very difficult for me to perform my role effectively.”

PCB Rejects Allegations
The PCB had categorically rejected all allegations regarding unpaid dues and mistreatment. A PCB spokesperson had stated that Gillespie resigned without completing the required four-month notice period, and the board stood by its position.

Despite the controversy surrounding his previous exit, Gillespie’s return to Pakistan and his new role in the PSL has generated significant excitement among cricket fans, highlighting the unpredictable and often dramatic nature of cricket coaching careers in the subcontinent.
