England: The UK government has announced a complete ban on mobile phone use in schools across England. According to new guidelines issued by the Department of Education, schools are required to create a mobile-free environment for students at all times. Education Secretary Bridget Phillipson has emphasized that students should not use phones even as calculators or for research during school hours.
The guidelines, released this week, instruct school heads to enforce the ban consistently across all classes and times, including breaks, lunch, and in between lessons. Parents are also encouraged to support the initiative. Teachers have been advised not to use phones in front of students, and compliance will be monitored by Ofsted, the government body overseeing school standards.
The Department for Science, Innovation, and Technology (DSIT) has also stated it will take measures regarding children’s use of social media. Currently, about 99.9% of primary schools and 90% of middle schools in England have mobile phone policies, yet surveys show 58% of middle school students and 65% of Key Stage 4 students admit to using phones in class without permission.
The government aims to ensure that students focus entirely on learning and classroom activities, minimizing distractions caused by mobile devices.
