Following the tragic death of Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar in a plane crash, the state government announced three days of state mourning. All government offices and schools have been declared closed on 28th January 2026.
The Deputy CM was traveling from Mumbai to Baramati on a Learjet 45 operated by VSR Aviation when the plane crashed near Baramati airport. Four others were on board, including the pilot-in-command Captain Sumit Kapoor, co-pilot Captain Shambhavi Pathak, PSO Vidip Jadhav, and PA Pinky Mali.
Clarification on School Closures
Reports on social media created confusion among students and parents regarding whether schools would remain closed for all three days of mourning. Maharashtra Education Department officials have clarified that only 28th January is a holiday for schools and government offices. Schools will remain open on 29th and 30th January 2026, and any further closures will be communicated in advance via official channels, including school notices and the department’s website and social media accounts.
During the three-day state mourning period (28–30 January), the national flag will be flown at half-mast across government buildings, and no official entertainment events will take place.
Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis expressed his condolences, stating that the absence of the Deputy CM will be deeply felt across the state.
