Working abroad is increasingly popular among Indian professionals, and Portugal now offers an exciting opportunity for job seekers. The Portuguese government provides a special visa that allows qualified foreign workers to enter Portugal and search for a job independently. Once employed, applicants can easily transition to a standard work visa.
Skilled Work-Seeking Visa
The visa, known as the Skilled Work-Seeking Visa, was previously called the Job Seeker Visa. It is specifically designed for professionals in IT, engineering, healthcare, and hospitality sectors, areas where Portugal faces workforce shortages. Only qualified candidates are eligible to apply.
Key Conditions
- The visa is valid for 120 days, with a possible 60-day extension.
- Holders can search for jobs only within Portugal and cannot travel to other Schengen countries during this period.
- If a job is not secured within the 180-day period, the applicant must leave Portugal and can reapply after one year.
Application Process
While the Portuguese government has not yet announced a new application process, it is expected to follow the rules of the previous Job Seeker Visa. Required documents typically include:
- Valid passport
- Recent photograph
- Criminal record clearance
- Travel insurance
- Proof of sufficient funds (approximately €2,000) to cover living expenses in Portugal
Upon arrival, applicants must register with the Institute of Employment and Vocational Training (IEFP) to start their job search.
This visa provides Indian professionals a unique opportunity to explore Portugal’s labor market firsthand and secure employment in high-demand sectors.
