Job Hunting in the US Takes a Surprising Turn: Dating Apps Become the New Networking Platform

The U.S. job market is currently experiencing turbulence, leaving even highly qualified workers struggling to secure employment. As traditional avenues like LinkedIn and Indeed become increasingly competitive, job seekers are adopting unconventional approaches—one of which has recently grabbed attention: using dating apps to find work.

From LinkedIn to Grindr

Devin Barker is among those turning to dating platforms to explore job opportunities. Speaking to Business Insider, he explained that a workplace accident had left him unemployed and finding work in the hospitality sector was especially challenging. Instead of relying solely on job boards, Devin began networking on apps like Grindr. While he secured an interview through the platform, the role was eventually offered to another candidate. Nevertheless, he observed, “I’ve noticed more success using these apps. There’s no embarrassment in finding work here.”

Growing Trend Among Professionals

Devin is not alone. A recent Glassdoor Community Pool survey revealed that 29% of respondents have either used or are considering using dating apps to advance their careers. Networking through dating platforms is not entirely new; several professionals have leveraged these apps to connect with clients, referrals, or even direct work opportunities. In essence, platforms initially designed for finding love are now doubling as tools for career advancement.

Real-Life Success Stories

Lexi Flynn, a 27-year-old social media manager in Philadelphia, shared her experience. While seeking side income, she connected with a client on Hinge. Despite initial language barriers with the client from Indonesia, their conversations quickly shifted from casual interaction to work. Lexi conducted a free social media audit and shared detailed feedback via Instagram. Impressed, the client introduced her to their marketing manager, who subsequently offered Lexi a position.

As the U.S. job market remains uncertain, professionals are demonstrating increasing creativity and adaptability—transforming even dating apps into effective career-building platforms.
