JEE Main Success Story: From Daily Wage Labor to Engineering Dream – Meet Rohini

Rohini, hailing from a poor tribal family in Tamil Nadu, turned her dream of becoming an engineer into reality while working in the fields. Balancing labor work during the day and studying at night, she successfully cleared the JEE Main exam on her first attempt, setting a remarkable example of determination and perseverance.

Early Struggles and Family Background

Rohini grew up in a small home in the Panchamalai hills, witnessing her family’s daily struggles. Her parents worked as laborers in nearby fields, often fighting to make ends meet. Despite the financial hardships, Rohini dreamed big: she aspired to become an engineer and break the cycle of poverty.

Studying Amid Labor Work

Rohini completed her schooling at a government school in Chinna Isupur, Tamil Nadu. While her father, Mathiazhagan, worked as a laborer in Kerala, her mother contributed by working in the fields locally. Rohini often joined them in labor work, yet she remained committed to her studies. She realized early on that education was her only path to achieving her dreams.

Cracking One of India’s Toughest Exams on the First Attempt

Clearing the IIT-JEE, one of India’s most challenging exams, was no small feat. In 2024, Rohini scored 73.8% in the JEE Main examination, becoming the first tribal girl from her state to achieve this milestone. Her success has inspired other girls in her community to aim high and pursue their educational goals.

Credit to School and Government Support

Rohini acknowledged the role of her parents, school headmaster, and the Tamil Nadu government in her achievement. Her entire schooling was completed at a tribal government school, whose expenses were covered by the state. She said, “The Tamil Nadu government supported me by covering my fees. I am grateful to the Chief Minister and my school staff for helping me perform well.”

Today: Engineering at NIT Trichy

Rohini is now a student at the National Institute of Technology, Tiruchirappalli (NIT Trichy), pursuing a degree in Mechanical Engineering. Her journey from a daily wage laborer to an aspiring engineer exemplifies courage, hard work, and the power of unwavering determination.
