Indians Can Join the US Army: Here’s What You Need to Know

When it comes to the world’s most powerful military forces, the United States Army is always at the top of the list. Interestingly, foreign citizens, including Indians, can also join, provided they meet certain criteria and pass a mandatory test.

Hollywood movies like Saving Private Ryan, Apocalypse Now, and Black Hawk Down have showcased the discipline, skill, and duty of US soldiers, inspiring many to consider a career in the US military. Here’s a detailed guide on how Indian citizens can become part of the US armed forces.

Eligibility Criteria for Indians:
While US Army jobs are primarily reserved for American citizens, foreign nationals can also apply if they meet one of the following requirements:

  • Must hold a Permanent Resident Card (Green Card), or
  • Must have US citizenship.

Additionally, applicants should be proficient in reading, writing, and speaking English.

Branches of the US Armed Forces:
The US Armed Forces consist of five main branches:

  1. US Army
  2. US Navy
  3. Marine Corps
  4. US Air Force
  5. Coast Guard

Indians who are Green Card holders or US citizens can apply to join any of these branches. To determine suitability for a particular branch, applicants must pass the Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB) test.

Key Requirements to Join the US Army:

  • Age: Minimum 17 years
  • Medical Fitness: Applicants must be medically fit and pass a full medical examination
  • Education: High school diploma or 12th-grade completion is mandatory. Bachelor’s degree holders may get promotion opportunities
  • Character: No criminal record; must be of good moral character
  • Substance Test: Applicants must pass a drug and alcohol test

About the ASVAB Test:
The ASVAB (Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery) is an aptitude test conducted under the supervision of the US Department of Defense. It helps determine which branch an applicant is best suited for.

The test covers subjects such as:

  • General Science
  • Arithmetic Reasoning
  • Word Knowledge & Paragraph Comprehension
  • Mathematics
  • Electronics Information
  • Auto & Shop Information
  • Mechanical Comprehension

Test Format:

  1. Computer-based: 135–145 questions, 1.5–2 hours
  2. Paper-pencil format: 225 questions, 3 hours

The results are expressed as an AFQT score, which determines eligibility for each branch:

  • US Army: 30
  • US Navy: 36
  • Marine Corps: 32
  • US Air Force: 31
  • Coast Guard: 36
