Indian Students in Iran Urged to Return Home Amid Escalating Unrest

New Delhi/Tehran: The ongoing protests in Iran have put Indian students pursuing higher education in the country in a precarious situation. Iran has long been a popular destination for Indian students, particularly for medical, pharmacy, and dental courses, due to its affordable education.

Rising Violence and Government Advisory:
Over 2,500 people have died so far in the ongoing unrest in Iran, which has gradually turned violent. Demonstrations have erupted in Tehran and other major cities, creating a tense environment for local residents and international students alike. Concerned for their safety, the Indian government has issued an urgent advisory for students to leave Iran immediately.

The Indian Embassy in Tehran has instructed students to use all available modes of transport, including commercial flights, to return to India safely. Students have been advised to avoid areas where protests are taking place, keep all travel documents such as passports and IDs handy, and remain in regular contact with the embassy. A dedicated helpline and online registration portal have been set up to assist students in coordinating their safe return.

Past Evacuations as Precedent:
This is not the first time Indian students in Iran have faced such a situation. In June, when attacks affected Iranian cities, the Indian government had successfully organized evacuations. Similarly, students returning now may have their academic schedules disrupted.

Number of Students and Courses:
Approximately 10,000 Indian students are currently studying in Iran, with a significant proportion pursuing MBBS, followed by pharmacy and Bachelor of Dental Surgery programs. Many of these students hail from Jammu & Kashmir.

Future of Their Education:
Concerns about academic disruption remain, but authorities are optimistic that universities may provide online classes to help students continue their studies remotely. This approach has been used in the past for students returning from Ukraine and during the COVID-19 pandemic. Once the situation in Iran stabilizes, students may have the option to resume in-person classes.

If you want, I can also create a shorter, front-page version with a headline-style urgency, highlighting the “Immediate Return Advisory for Indian Students in Iran.” It would read like a breaking news story for newspapers. Do you want me to do that?
