
New Delhi: The Department of Posts is set to release the much-awaited detailed notification for India Post GDS Recruitment 2026 today, January 31. This massive recruitment drive is expected to fill more than 28,000 posts of Gramin Dak Sevak (GDS) across 23 postal circles in the country, offering a major opportunity for Class 10 pass candidates seeking government employment.
So far, only a short notification has been issued, indicating that online registration would begin from January 31, 2026. The complete advertisement, including eligibility criteria, state-wise vacancies, pay details, and application guidelines, will be published on the official website indiapostgdsonline.gov.in.

The recruitment includes appointments to the posts of:
- Branch Post Master (BPM)
- Assistant Branch Post Master (ABPM)
Selection Process
One of the most attractive features of the GDS recruitment is that no written examination is conducted. Selection is done purely on the basis of merit prepared from Class 10 marks. After the release of the merit list, shortlisted candidates are called for document verification at their respective postal branches.

According to available details, the highest number of vacancies are reported in:
- Maharashtra – 3,553 posts
- Uttar Pradesh – 3,169 posts
- West Bengal – 2,982 posts
Other major states with significant vacancies include:
- Tamil Nadu – 2,009
- Gujarat – 1,830
- Kerala – 1,691
- Bihar – 1,347
- Odisha – 1,191
- Chhattisgarh – 1,155
- Andhra Pradesh – 1,060
Comparison with Previous Year
In 2025, India Post had announced 21,413 GDS vacancies, with the application process running from February 10 to March 3. This year’s recruitment is expected to surpass last year’s numbers, making it one of the largest GDS hiring drives in recent times.

Eligible candidates will be able to apply online through the official portal once the detailed notification is released. Applicants are advised to keep their documents, Class 10 mark sheets, and category certificates ready to avoid last-minute issues.
