IIT Delhi Alumni Impact 2026: ₹477 Crore Endowment Fund and Global Achievements of 65,000 Alumni

The Indian Institute of Technology Delhi (IIT Delhi) has released its first-ever Alumni Impact Report, highlighting the contributions of its former students both financially and professionally. The report provides insights into how alumni have supported the institute through endowments and have excelled across industries globally.

Endowment Fund Contributions

  • IIT Delhi has raised ₹477 crore through alumni contributions, of which ₹338 crore has already been received by the institute.
  • The institute, which started in 1966 with 150 students, now has over 65,000 alumni worldwide.
  • Currently, 60% of the institute’s funding comes from the government, while the remaining 40% is generated internally and through alumni contributions.

“Our alumni are contributing significantly across startups, corporate sectors, services, social work, and research globally. This report attempts to measure the institute’s impact through the output and influence of its alumni,” said Professor Rangan Banerjee, Director, IIT Delhi.

Key Alumni Contributions and Achievements

  • Academic Excellence: 75+ academic chairs and 115+ awards funded by alumni.
  • Student Support: 137+ scholarships and international travel grants.
  • Infrastructure Development: Contributions to Mittal Sports Complex, Yardy School of AI, and CERCA Climate Research Center.
  • Entrepreneurship: 2,500+ alumni are founders, co-founders, or leaders in startups worldwide.
  • Corporate Leadership: 15% alumni in senior corporate roles; 10,000 alumni in banking, finance, manufacturing, and engineering sectors.
  • Global Presence: 50+ alumni in QS top 100 universities; 4 of the top 10 unicorn founders, including Elon Musk, have IIT Delhi connections.
  • Public Service & Defense: 650+ alumni in PSUs (including 250 IAS officers) and over 700 in naval training.
  • Geographical Distribution: 70% of alumni reside in India (~40,000), 7,000+ in the US, and 1,000+ in the UK.
  • Employment Impact: 480,000+ direct jobs created, including founders like Deepinder Goyal (Zomato, Blinkit), Harsh Jain (Grow), Vidit Aatrey (Meesho), Sachin & Bini Bansal (Flipkart), Ashutosh Garg (Atfold.AI & Bloomreach), Jyoti Bansal (AppDynamics), and Rishabh Goyal (Credgenics).
  • Global Recognition: 100+ alumni listed among the top 2% of global professionals.

IIT Delhi Vision 2035

IIT Delhi is preparing its 10-year Vision 2035 plan, which will be launched in May 2026. Key focus areas include infrastructure, faculty, courses, and research.

  • Infrastructure Funding: Estimated requirement ₹8–9,000 crore, with funding planned as: one-third self-generated, one-third from alumni contributions, and one-third from the government.
  • Current Initiatives: Interest from the existing endowment fund is already being utilized for ongoing projects.
  • Hostel Expansion: Construction of two 8–10 floor hostels (boys and girls) to accommodate 4,000 students, expected to take three years. Presently, hostel capacity is limited to 450–500 students per hostel.

“IIT Delhi alumni not only shape India’s progress but also make a global impact. This report is a first step in documenting their remarkable influence,” said Professor Banerjee.

This report positions IIT Delhi as the first IIT to systematically document alumni contributions, setting a benchmark for other institutes to track their societal and institutional impact.
