How to Build a High-Paying AI Career in the U.S.: Expert Shares the Secret Formula

The field of Artificial Intelligence (AI) is booming in the United States, with top companies like Apple, Google, and numerous startups actively seeking skilled AI professionals. However, many students and early-career workers are confused about the best path to secure a job in this fast-growing sector.

PhD Not Mandatory for AI Jobs

Devi Parikh, an Indian-American AI expert with over 15 years of experience in research, academia, and leading tech companies, recently shared insights for aspiring AI professionals. Speaking to Business Insider, she emphasized that a PhD is not essential to land a top AI job. Instead, practical skills, hands-on experience, and the ability to solve real-world problems are far more valuable.

Parikh, former Senior Director of Generative AI at Meta and current Co-Founder & CEO of AI startup Yutori, highlighted that her own career journey involved working in research, teaching, and major tech labs before founding her rapidly growing startup in 2024.

Experience Over Degrees

According to Parikh, many students mistakenly believe that success in AI requires advanced academic degrees. While higher education is beneficial for research roles, most industry positions value hands-on experience. She advises working on real projects in startups, large tech labs, or open-source communities to develop the skills employers are looking for.

“Consistent effort and dedication to your projects will help you stand out, build multiple skills, and gain practical experience,” Parikh said. At Yutori, she primarily hires candidates with real-world experience, relevant technical skills, and the ability to clear rigorous technical interviews.

Stay Adaptive and Keep Practicing

Parikh also emphasized the importance of adaptability in the fast-evolving AI field. She encourages professionals to experiment with different tools, focus on a specific project or idea, and persevere until they achieve success.

With AI transforming industries at a breakneck pace, following this practical, experience-driven approach could be the key to building a rewarding career in the United States.
