H-1B, F-1 Visa Interviews Postponed: Indian Students and Workers Face Delays, Here’s What to Do

Indian students and professionals planning to travel to the United States for work or study are facing fresh challenges as US visa interview appointments are being repeatedly rescheduled. Both H-1B work visa applicants and F-1 student visa aspirants are affected, with some appointments originally scheduled for December now deferred to early 2026.

Why Are Visa Appointments Being Delayed?

Before issuing a visa, US embassies require applicants to attend an in-person interview. Recently, several applicants have reported sudden rescheduling of their appointments, leaving their travel and study plans in uncertainty. The main reason for these delays is the US State Department’s intensified screening of applicants’ social media profiles and online presence. Some applicants are undergoing more detailed background checks, resulting in a limited number of available interview slots at embassies and consulates.

The US Embassy in India clarified the situation, stating: “Applicants should note that if you receive an email indicating your visa appointment has been rescheduled, Mission India will assist you with your new appointment. Please do not appear at the embassy or consulate on your original appointment date, as entry will not be permitted.”

How Indian Students and Workers Can Cope

  1. Stay Calm and Understand the Impact: While delays can be frustrating, it’s important to recognize that the rescheduling is official and new appointments will be provided. Preparing for this change calmly will help in managing academic or work commitments effectively.
  2. Explore Remote Work Options: Indian professionals waiting for H-1B visas can consult their employers about working remotely until their visas are approved. Many US companies allow remote work, enabling applicants to begin their jobs without needing to travel immediately.
  3. Strengthen Your Profile: Students whose interviews are postponed can focus on enhancing their skills. Obtaining certifications in cloud computing, artificial intelligence, data science, or cybersecurity can improve their chances of visa approval and provide better career opportunities after graduation.
  4. Financial Planning: Delays can increase the cost of studying abroad. Students should create a financial plan to cover additional expenses, including accommodation, food, and other living costs, in case they arrive later than expected.
  5. Consider Alternative Destinations: While the US remains a primary destination, students and professionals can explore other countries such as Canada, Australia, and Germany, where visa processes may be faster and less complicated.

As visa appointment delays continue, Indian students and workers are advised to remain patient, plan proactively, and explore alternative options to minimize disruption to their study or work goals in the United States.
