Students and parents take note: Guru Tegh Bahadur Shaheedi Diwas, observed annually to honor the ninth Sikh Guru’s supreme sacrifice, will affect school schedules across India.

Holiday Date in Uttar Pradesh Changed
For 2025, the Uttar Pradesh government has revised the official gazetted holiday list. While Guru Tegh Bahadur Martyrdom Day was initially marked for 24 November, it has now been shifted to 25 November (Tuesday). All government offices and schools in Uttar Pradesh will remain closed on this day.

Holiday Observance in Other States
In Punjab and Haryana, the holiday is traditionally observed on 24 November. Delhi schools typically follow the state government’s holiday calendar; however, no official circular has been issued for 2025 as yet.

Guidance for Students and Parents
Students and parents are advised to check their respective state government notices or official school calendars to confirm holiday schedules. Verification from school principals can also provide clarity.

Significance of Guru Tegh Bahadur Shaheedi Diwas
Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji is remembered for his unparalleled courage and ultimate sacrifice for religious freedom. During the reign of Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb, Kashmiri Pandits sought his protection against persecution. Guru Ji assured their safety but was subsequently arrested. Despite enduring months of imprisonment and the execution of his companions, he refused to renounce his faith, ultimately sacrificing his life to uphold righteousness and protect others’ religious liberty.

Guru Tegh Bahadur Martyrdom Day serves as a reminder of selfless courage and unwavering commitment to justice and freedom.
