Finland Eyes India for Higher Education Expansion
Students aspiring for international education now have another exciting opportunity. Finland has expressed interest in opening its university campuses in India. Discussions between the Finnish and Indian authorities focused on programs in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) and Business Studies, paving the way for future collaborations in higher education.
Student Exchange Programs to Begin
Finland is renowned for its high-quality education system, and plans are underway to introduce university exchange programs between Indian and Finnish institutions. These programs will allow students to study for one or two semesters at a partner university abroad, gaining new academic and cultural experiences.
High-Level Meetings Confirm Collaboration
A recent meeting between India’s Ministry of Education and Finnish officials emphasized strengthening educational cooperation. Key attendees included Dr. Vineet Joshi, Secretary of Higher Education, Finland’s Education Ambassador Outi Hakkanen, Science and Higher Education Counselor Dr. Liisa Toivonen, and senior officials from Finland’s National Council of Education. Discussions focused on school and higher education, skill development, and collaborative research opportunities.
Research Collaboration Under SPARC
The meeting also highlighted expanding research partnerships under SPARC (Scheme for Promotion of Academic and Research Collaboration), enhancing student and faculty mobility, and sharing ideas for future academic collaborations. Finnish experts praised India’s IITs, universities, and research institutes as globally competitive and committed to joint research initiatives.
Foreign Universities Already Entering India
According to UGC regulations, multiple international universities have received approval to open campuses in India. From 2026, Indian students will have access to 16 foreign universities’ Indian campuses for undergraduate and postgraduate programs. Finland intends to prioritize STEM and Business courses.
Existing and Upcoming Campuses
Several campuses have already started or will start soon:
- Gujarat, Gandhinagar (GIFT City): Two Australian universities’ campuses inaugurated.
- Deakin University and University of Wollongong, Australia: Operational.
- University of Southampton, Gurugram: Classes began in 2025.
- University of Liverpool, Bengaluru: Programs to start August 2026.
