From the Border to Rajpath: 26-Year-Old Simran Bala to Make History on Republic Day

On 26 January 2026, Simran Bala, a 26-year-old Assistant Commandant of the CRPF, will create history by leading a male CRPF marching contingent at the Republic Day parade in New Delhi. For the first time ever, a female officer will command over 140 male personnel during this iconic event, symbolizing the growing role of women in India’s security forces and showcasing a proud new chapter for Jammu and Kashmir.

Early Life and Inspiration
Born on 10 December 1999 in Naushera, Rajouri district, Jammu and Kashmir, Simran grew up near the border. Witnessing cross-border firing firsthand inspired her to join the Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF) and serve her country in challenging conditions. In an interview with ANI, she said, “Growing up in a border district, I witnessed firing from across the border. That motivated me to join CAPF so I could serve in sensitive areas.”

Academic and Career Journey
Simran completed her schooling in Jammu and pursued higher education in Gujarat, earning a bachelor’s degree from a college in Gandhinagar. During her final semester, she prepared for the UPSC CAPF exam 2021, securing 85th All India Rank in her very first attempt. Out of 151 selected candidates, she became the first woman from Jammu and Kashmir to join the CRPF through this examination, becoming a role model for aspiring women from her region and across the country.

First Posting and Professional Excellence
Her first posting was in the Naxal-affected forests of Chhattisgarh, where she joined the elite Bastariya Battalion, a unit known for operating in dense forests under extreme conditions. Her dedication and resilience in the field highlighted her leadership potential.

Selection to Lead Male CRPF Contingent
Initially part of the parade, Simran was later chosen to lead the male contingent after her performance during intensive rehearsals impressed senior officers. Her confidence, precision in drills, and ability to command the team earned her the honor to lead the CRPF unit on Republic Day.

A Symbol of Women’s Empowerment and Jammu & Kashmir’s Transformation
When Simran marches down Rajpath, it will be more than just a parade moment. Her leadership will symbolize changing traditions, where merit and competence define roles. It will also highlight the increasing presence of women in uniformed services and reflect the evolving and proud image of Jammu & Kashmir. Her story inspires future generations of women to aim for positions of leadership in the armed forces and beyond.

Simran Bala’s journey from the borderlands to the national stage is a powerful testament to courage, determination, and the breaking of barriers in Indian security forces.
