From 2026, Maths Education to Get a Makeover: NCERT Launches New ‘Ganita Prakash’ Textbook

New Delhi: Students no longer have to fear mathematics! The National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) has released updated textbooks for classes 1 to 8, with work ongoing for classes 9 to 12. The initiative aims to make learning mathematics more engaging by connecting concepts to real-life applications.

Maths in Daily Life
The new Class 8 textbook, ‘Ganita Prakash – Part 2’, incorporates practical examples to teach mathematical principles. From calculating GST on a restaurant bill to measuring ingredient ratios in cooking, the lessons demonstrate how mathematics is part of everyday life. According to NCERT Director Prof. Dinesh Prasad Saklani, “Mathematics should not be confined to textbooks alone. By linking it to daily life, students can understand concepts more easily and approach the subject without fear.”

Learning Through Stories and Puzzles
The updated curriculum also highlights the contributions of ancient Indian mathematicians. For instance, the Baudhayana-Pythagoras Theorem is featured, emphasizing that Baudhayana had formulated the theorem centuries before Pythagoras. The textbook uses stories, puzzles, and references to India’s mathematical heritage to strengthen conceptual understanding.

Modern Tools and Concepts
Students will also learn practical skills such as calculating GST, using Excel for data analysis, and exploring modern concepts like space traffic management. These additions aim to make mathematics relevant, practical, and stimulating for students.

NCERT’s Wider Plan
NCERT has completed textbooks for classes 1 to 8, including social science books, and is currently preparing new textbooks for classes 9 to 12. A bridge course will also be introduced for Class 11 students. All new textbooks are designed according to the National Curriculum Framework for School Education (NCF-SE), emphasizing active learning, visual aids, and interactive exercises to enhance student engagement.

With these changes, NCERT aims to foster confidence in students and make mathematics an enjoyable subject rather than a daunting one.
