Studying abroad is a dream for millions of Indian students, but not everyone is suited to pursue education far from home. An Indian scholar, who completed his PhD in Germany and now resides in the UK, shared insights on who should consider studying overseas and how to maximize success.
The Growing Trend
Over 1.8 million Indian students are currently pursuing education in more than 150 countries. From undergraduate to PhD programs, thousands leave India every year to pursue higher studies. While enthusiasm for studying abroad is high, the critical question remains: who should truly take this step?
Experience of a Scholar
Sharing his journey on Reddit, the scholar wrote, “Given my family’s financial background, my parents couldn’t afford a master’s degree abroad. Fortunately, I received scholarships for my BSc and MSc at a Tier-1 university in India.”
He later pursued a PhD in Germany on a prestigious scholarship, receiving approximately €2,100 per month for four years, which covered his studies and living expenses. Following this, he moved to the UK, where he secured permanent residency within three years through a Global Talent Visa.
Who Should Consider Studying Abroad?
The scholar emphasized that even with excellent qualifications, landing a job abroad depends on the field’s demand and one’s existing network. Based on his experience, he outlined five key factors for students considering foreign education:
- Learning and Experience Over Settlement: Go abroad to study, learn, and gain work experience—not solely to settle permanently.
- Financial Stability: Only pursue overseas education if it does not strain you or your family financially.
- Top-Tier University Admission: Enroll in highly reputed universities offering courses that are in high demand globally.
- Specialized Skills: Only consider abroad if you possess unique or exceptional skills sought in the international job market.
- Strong Work Experience and Network: A solid work background in India and professional networks can significantly increase your chances of employment abroad.
He warned, “Many students from Tier-2 or Tier-3 universities struggle to find jobs even after spending lakhs of rupees. I have seen friends, classmates, and relatives fall into debt despite their degrees.”
With these guidelines, aspiring international students can make informed decisions, ensuring that studying abroad becomes a stepping stone rather than a costly gamble.
