Face Recognition to Be Mandatory for JEE, NEET from 2026: NTA Prepares New Exam System

The National Testing Agency (NTA) is set to introduce a major overhaul in exam security for all its entrance examinations, including JEE and NEET, from 2026. Under the new system, candidates will be required to submit live photographs, and facial recognition technology will be used at exam centers to ensure strict identity verification. The Ministry of Education has emphasized stringent monitoring to prevent any malpractice.

Live Photo Submission Required

Candidates will now need to upload a recent live photograph at the time of application. The system will reject old or outdated photos, and images must be in JPG or JPEG format. This is intended to ensure that the candidate appearing for the exam is the same person who applied.

Biometric Verification and Face Recognition

A dual verification process will be implemented, combining live photos and recent scanned images. Exam centers will utilize face recognition and biometric systems, ensuring that only registered candidates can enter and sit for the exams.

Enhanced Monitoring at Exam Centers

Senior officials confirmed that most exam observers will be from government institutions. In addition, technologies like CCTV and AI monitoring will be deployed to supervise exam centers in real time. This move also aims to reduce dependence on private coaching centers.

Data-Driven Approach for JEE and NEET

The ministry has reviewed data from JEE Main and Advanced exams, analyzing the success of students who took coaching versus those who did not. Steps are also being taken to ensure students are not allocated distant exam centers, reducing logistical stress.

e-KYC Verification

Digital e-KYC authentication will be used to verify candidates’ identity through the UIDAI’s Central Identities Data Repository (CIDR) using details such as name, date of birth, and photograph. Candidates must also provide parent information in the application form.

Girls’ Hostels Across Districts

The ministry plans to establish girls’ hostels in every district to facilitate access to education, as current facilities primarily serve working women. The proposal will be submitted to the Finance Ministry, aiming to increase enrollment and support female students nationwide.

With these measures, the NTA is setting a new benchmark in exam security and transparency, ensuring fair and safe examinations for all candidates.
