For students aiming to work in the United States, the H-1B visa is the key to long-term employment. It allows individuals to work for three years, extendable for another three years.
Understanding H-1B for Students
Many students who study in the U.S. aspire to secure a job after graduation. While Optional Practical Training (OPT) or STEM-OPT allows them to work temporarily, permanent employment typically requires H-1B sponsorship. Most companies prefer sponsoring students already on OPT, as they are familiar with the company culture and work environment.
However, many students are unsure how to approach their company for H-1B sponsorship. Directly asking for it can sometimes backfire, leaving students confused or hesitant. Immigration expert Sriram Arumeli explains a step-by-step approach to increase the chances of successfully obtaining H-1B sponsorship.
Factors Determining H-1B Approval
According to Arumeli, securing an H-1B visa largely depends on whether the company is willing to include your name in the H-1B lottery. He emphasizes that F-1 visa holders need to identify the right person in the organization—usually a manager or HR personnel—who can make sponsorship-related decisions.
How to Approach the Company
Arumeli breaks the process into four key steps:
- Identify the Right Contact: Determine who in your company can influence H-1B sponsorship decisions. This could be your direct manager or an HR representative.
- Start a Conversation Strategically: Initiate a discussion about your performance and contributions without mentioning H-1B sponsorship initially. You can request a meeting or send an email saying you want feedback on your work, rather than directly asking for a visa.
- Highlight Your Value: During the meeting, focus on the value you bring to the company. Share measurable achievements and how your work benefits the team or organization. Only at the end of the conversation should you raise the topic of H-1B sponsorship. Explain your timeline, lottery attempts remaining, and politely inquire whether the company can sponsor you.
- Follow Up Correctly: Avoid repeatedly asking about sponsorship, as this may create a negative impression. Instead, follow up thoughtfully. For example, you can reference your previous conversation and ask if now is the right time to discuss your inclusion in the lottery.
Arumeli stresses that approaching the company in a structured, professional manner increases the likelihood of a positive response. Students working on OPT should adopt this method to secure H-1B sponsorship efficiently and smoothly.
