Delhi-NCR Schools to Operate in Hybrid Mode Amid Rising Air Pollution: GRAP-IV Restrictions in Effect

Delhi-NCR is once again facing confusion over whether schools will remain open, as air pollution levels have crossed 400 AQI, entering the “hazardous” category. To protect students, the Delhi government has directed all schools, except for Classes 10 and 12, to shift to hybrid mode.

Schools Switch to Hybrid Mode
Following the spike in pollution, schools across Delhi have transitioned to a combination of offline and online classes. Students whose physical classes are suspended will continue their studies online. The shift comes after GRAP-IV (Graded Response Action Plan) rules were enforced to combat worsening air quality.

A circular issued by the Delhi Directorate of Education (DOE) instructs all schools under DOE, NDMC, MCD, and Delhi Cantonment Board—including government, aided, and private recognized institutions—to immediately adopt hybrid teaching methods until further notice. Classes up to 9th and 11th grades will operate online or offline, wherever feasible.

The directive also emphasizes that students and parents have the option to choose online education where available. School heads are tasked with ensuring that this information reaches parents and students promptly, and district education officers have been asked to monitor compliance.

School Timings Adjusted in Gautam Buddh Nagar
Due to dense fog and dropping temperatures, schools in Gautam Buddh Nagar have adjusted their timings: schools now open at 10:30 AM and close by 3:00 PM, as directed by the District Basic Education Officer.

Weather and Health Alerts
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a cold wave alert for parts of Delhi-NCR. A dense smog layer combined with extreme cold has reduced visibility, increased health risks, and prompted the enforcement of GRAP-IV measures. Authorities have warned that the combination of severe pollution and cold could pose serious health concerns, especially for children.

With the worsening situation, parents and students are advised to stay informed about school schedules and take necessary precautions.
