
The Common University Entrance Test (CUET UG) 2026 has already attracted over 13 lakh applicants for undergraduate admissions across India. Among these, the English examination is the most popular, with 10.26 lakh students applying.
CUET UG 2026 registrations are open until 4 February, giving students a few more days to submit their applications.
Top Subjects for CUET UG 2026
Based on the subject-wise applications received so far, the most sought-after subjects include:
- English – 10.26 lakh applications
- Chemistry – 7.48 lakh applications
- General Aptitude Test – 7.40 lakh applications
- Physics – 7.17 lakh applications
- Mathematics – 4.59 lakh applications
Other popular subjects include Biology (4.42 lakh), Economics (2.12 lakh), Business Studies (1.93 lakh), Accounts (1.78 lakh), and Political Science (1.35 lakh). Applications for less opted subjects like History (1.06 lakh), Computer Science (81,909), Geography (72,681), Physical Education (58,831), Agriculture (33,304), Psychology (32,922), Sociology (29,932), Fine Arts (14,304), and Environmental Science (9,439) have also been received. The final numbers will be clear after the fee submission deadline on 7 February.
Language Preferences
Among language tests, English leads, followed by:
- Hindi – 1.25 lakh
- Tamil – 5,325
- Bengali – 3,102
- Urdu – 2,525
- Telugu – 1,800
- Assamese – 1,617
- Odia – 1,408
- Punjabi – 1,243
- Malayalam – 1,058
- Kannada – 788
Universities Participating
A total of 233 universities have confirmed participation based on CUET scores, including:
- 48 Central Universities
- 30 State Universities
- 27 Deemed Universities
- 113 Private Universities
- 7 Other Government Institutions
The number of participating universities is expected to rise, especially in the private sector. These seven other institutions, known for specialized courses, include:
- Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR)
- Rajiv Gandhi Institute of Petroleum Technology
- National Forensic Sciences University
- Footwear Design & Development Institute
- Indian Institute of Tourism & Travel Management
- National Institute of Food Technology, Entrepreneurship & Management – Kundli
- Government College for Women, Parade Ground, Jammu
Rising Trend in Registrations
This year, over 13 lakh students have registered, with more than 11 lakh applications already submitted. According to the National Testing Agency (NTA), the final number of registrations may reach 14 lakh after fee submission. For comparison, registrations in 2024 were 13,47,820, and in 2025 they rose slightly to 13,54,699.
With such high numbers in core subjects, competition for admission in leading universities like Delhi University, BHU, Jamia Millia Islamia, and JNU is expected to be particularly intense.
Registrations for CUET UG 2026 close on 4 February, with the last date for fee submission on 7 February.
