If you are planning to study, work, or settle in Canada or Australia, mastering English is essential. Both countries require proof of English proficiency for student visas, work permits, and permanent residency (PR). One of the most recognized tests for this purpose is the CELPIP (Canadian English Language Proficiency Index Program) General Test.
What is CELPIP?
The CELPIP General Test evaluates a candidate’s command of the English language across four skills: Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking. It is a computer-based test lasting approximately three hours. Unlike some other English exams, the speaking component is integrated, so candidates do not need a separate appointment.
Accepted by Canada and Australia
- In Canada, the CELPIP General Test is accepted by Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) for permanent residency applications.
- In Australia, the Department of Home Affairs recognizes CELPIP scores for visa applications, professional licensing exams, and academic programs.
Test Formats
- CELPIP General Test: Measures all four language skills and is used for PR, work, or study purposes.
- CELPIP General LS Test: Focuses only on Listening and Speaking, required for Canadian citizenship. This format lasts 1.5 hours and costs $195.
Test Structure – General Test
- Listening (46–55 minutes): Includes problem-solving exercises, daily conversations, news articles, paragraphs, and viewpoints.
- Reading (43–56 minutes): Comprises different types of paragraphs followed by questions that test comprehension.
- Writing (53 minutes): Candidates respond to prompts on-screen, demonstrating written English skills.
- Speaking (15 minutes): Involves answering everyday questions verbally to assess practical communication skills.
The CELPIP test gauges how effectively candidates use English in everyday situations. One advantage is that free sample papers and study materials are available online, allowing candidates to practice before the actual exam. CELPIP centers are available globally, making it convenient to choose a location.
Passing the CELPIP General Test is a crucial step toward studying, working, or obtaining permanent residency in English-speaking countries like Canada and Australia.
