Canada is among the few countries in the world where students can apply for Permanent Residency (PR) after completing their studies, provided they meet certain criteria. Indian students have long preferred Canada for higher education, not only because of its world-class universities, but also due to the opportunity to gain work experience and eventually settle in the country. Here’s how students can improve their chances of obtaining PR.
1. Stay Updated on Immigration Policies
Canada’s immigration policies are constantly evolving, often reflecting economic conditions. For instance, the IRCC recently announced that 380,000 foreign nationals will receive PR in 2026. Students must choose courses carefully, ensuring they meet eligibility criteria for PR. The likelihood of securing PR increases if students obtain a Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) after completing their degree.
2. Choose In-Demand Courses
Certain fields in Canada consistently have high demand for skilled workers, including:
- Healthcare
- Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM)
- Trades
- Transport
- Agriculture
For example, pursuing courses in architecture, engineering, or data science significantly enhances a student’s chances of qualifying for PR.
3. Explore Provincial Nominee Programs (PNP)
Except for Quebec and Nunavut, all Canadian provinces and territories can select skilled workers through the Provincial Nominee Program (PNP). Even if a student does not qualify through the federal PR program, PNP provides an alternate route. Most provinces actively nominate skilled workers for permanent residency, making it a valuable pathway.
4. Strengthen Language Skills
Canada has two official languages: English and French. Proficiency in one or both languages improves the chances of PR, as the Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) awards points based on age, education, work experience, and language proficiency. Students can boost their CRS score by performing well in language tests like IELTS or CELPIP.
5. Validate Your Degrees
The Canadian government’s Express Entry system awards points for education. If a student has multiple degrees, but one or more were obtained outside Canada, it is advisable to have them validated by a recognized institution. This increases the value of the degree and boosts the CRS score, enhancing the likelihood of receiving PR.
By carefully planning their education, choosing in-demand courses, improving language skills, and understanding Canada’s immigration programs, students can significantly increase their chances of securing permanent residency and building a successful career in Canada.
