Board Exam Tips: 8 Expert Strategies to Ace Class 10 English

Teachers believe that fear of English is often psychological rather than academic. Viewing the language as difficult can create anxiety, but approaching it as a regular subject can help students score high marks. With the Maharashtra Board Class 10 English exam scheduled for 27 February 2026, here are eight expert tips to boost preparation and confidence.

1. Understand the Paper Pattern

According to Ashwini Joshi, teacher at Gujanna Devi High School, the Class 10 English exam is 100 marks, with 80 marks for the written exam and 20 marks for internal assessment. The question paper follows a fixed pattern. Familiarity with this format and proper time management can eliminate half the stress before the exam.

2. Maintain Clear Sections and Preparation

Sunita Yadav, English teacher at Tulsi Hindi Medium School, explains that the paper is divided into distinct sections: Language Study, Textual Passages, Poetry, Non-Textual Passages, Writing Skills, and Skill Development. Understanding each section ensures students know how to allocate time effectively and what to focus on.

3. Score Full Marks in Language Study

The first question, worth 10 marks, comes from the Language Study section. Tasks include fill-in-the-blanks, sentence rearrangement, punctuation, and word formation. Regular practice can help students secure full marks in this section.

4. Develop a Reading Habit

The Textual Passage section carries 20 marks, with two passages followed by questions. Students should read each passage carefully before attempting answers. Well-understood and clearly written responses often earn higher marks.

5. Approach Poetry with Order and Clarity

The Poetry section is 10 marks, with questions requiring comprehension and appreciation. Students should mention the title, poet, rhyme scheme, theme, and central ideas systematically. Clear presentation enhances scoring potential.

6. Understand Non-Textual Passages

Non-Textual Passages, worth 15 marks, test comprehension of charts, tables, or informational texts. Solving previous years’ questions boosts confidence and prepares students for the types of questions asked.

7. Focus on Writing Skills and Format

The Writing Skills section carries 20 marks and includes formal and informal letters, dialogues, speeches, news report headlines, and short paragraph writing. Proper format, word balance, and neat presentation are crucial for scoring well.

8. Skill Development Section is Manageable

The final 5-mark section tests translation or vocabulary. It is relatively easy and provides students with a confidence boost. Proper practice ensures this section does not pose any difficulties.

Final Advice

Confidence and regular practice are key. Treat English as a language rather than a subject, practice writing, solve model papers, and answer questions based on comprehension. These strategies can help students excel in the Class 10 English exam.
