A finance professional of Indian origin, who has been living in Canada for over a decade, shared alarming incidents on social media platform Reddit. He recounted the case of Prashant Shrikumar in Edmonton, who experienced severe chest pain. Despite repeated complaints, he was made to wait 6–8 hours in the emergency room, ultimately collapsing and dying of a heart attack before receiving treatment.

In another incident, a friend accidentally cut his hand and went to the hospital with a bleeding wound. Even then, he was made to wait 12 hours, during which he lost a significant amount of blood. The Indian professional criticized the staff for being largely inexperienced and indifferent, warning that such delays could be life-threatening.

Free Healthcare ≠ Immediate Treatment
The Reddit post emphasized that while Canada offers free healthcare, it does not guarantee immediate medical attention. Patients often face long wait times, even in emergencies, unlike private hospitals in India where urgent care is provided promptly.

The post stated, “Being inside a hospital does not automatically mean you are safe. Emergency rooms are crowded, and waiting 10–15 hours for conditions that would be treated immediately in India is common.”

He highlighted that discrimination and systemic pressures due to increasing immigration can impact the quality of care. “Do not assume that chest pain or severe bleeding will automatically be treated as an emergency. Silence and patience, often considered virtues, can be dangerous here. Be prepared, know your rights, and advocate firmly for yourself,” he warned.
