Number of Districts and Administrative Details
Bihar comprises 38 districts, making it the 12th largest state in India by area and the 3rd largest by population. Most of its residents live in rural areas. The state is divided into 9 divisions, 101 sub-divisions, 534 blocks, over 45,000 villages, and 8,471 panchayats.
Largest District by Area
By area, West Champaran is the largest district in Bihar, covering 5,229 square kilometers. To put this into perspective, the district is roughly the size of the Caribbean nation Trinidad and Tobago. According to the 2011 Census, West Champaran had a population of 3.935 million, which is higher than the population of many smaller countries.
Most Populous District
When it comes to population, Patna, the state capital, takes the lead. According to 2011 Census data, Patna district had a population of 5.838 million, with 3.323 million in rural areas and 2.515 million in urban areas. By 2023 estimates, the population has grown to around 7 million, surpassing the populations of countries like Norway and Finland.
Area vs. Population
It is important to note the distinction: West Champaran is the largest district by area, while Patna is the largest by population. Hence, the state has two different districts holding the title of “largest” in their respective categories.
Bihar continues to be a land of historical significance and demographic marvels, where each district tells a unique story in terms of size, population, and cultural heritage.
